Applying Xubuntu defaults to packages.

This came up during the meeting on 23rd November.

Looking for views on this - the discussion at the meeting commenced at
23:25.

I'll start the ball rolling ...

I am deeply dubious unless this can be done simply - if we end up with
things done specifically per package, where do we end?

My favourite? Your favourite?

Cheers

We already do this with a few non-defaults.
- Compton, which is configured to integrate cleanly with Xubuntu.
- QT applications, which we have the configuration for but don't include
the needed qt5-style-plugins package.

The following applications already have support, but it's not enabled by
default.
- Plank, Greybird has a native theme for Plank, but it's not enabled.
- GtkSourceView themes, included for Mousepad, compatible with Gedit and
Pluma.

There's likely other examples, but in areas where the hard work is already
done, why wouldn't we include the configuration to improve user experience
out of the box?

I'm not a Xubuntu developper but I think this is the right thing to do. The more user friendly it is, the best it will be.

XFCE4 is alright for software developper (which I am), but it's still a tad bit difficult for daily/casual users. Especially the one coming from windows, which is what we should go after since Xubuntu is the best anti-windows OS currently available (lightweight, fast, easy to tweak...).

I've installed Xubuntu on more than 50 machines for tech-litterate people who were curious about ubuntu and they always bring upon the same problems :

- Why is VLC not available out of the box ?
- Why do it uses transmission instead of Qbittorrent (which is more and more popular for casual sensitive about open source projects) ?
- Why is there some "tearing" problems, even on high-end machines ?
- Why are the icons so ugly ?
- Why is the firewall not activated by default ? (sudo ufw enable command).

Some chose to stick with XFCE4, but many chose to just switch to ubuntu or go back to windows because of those little things, which is a huge shame. Those little things adds up and casual/mainstream audiences don't care about tweaking stuff for hours.

I love XFCE4 and I have nothing but respect for the team behind it, but sometimes, at least from the exterior, it looks like the team behind work hard to make their work as unappealing as possible for non-dev people.

Just the 2cents of someone who believes in this project and would like it to be the default choice for ubuntu, debian and such.

Very briefly commenting about the quoted software here: they both use
the Qt toolkit and thus would bring in a lot of unwanted dependencies.
This would not only mean they would be likely slower to run on lower end
machines, they would also likely appear less integrated with the system
than their GTK counterparts.
