XFWM 4.13 - Synchronize drawing to vertical blank

Hi everyone,

I think XFWM 4.13 should fix the famous XFCE screen tearing with the
"Synchronize drawing to vertical blank" present in Compositor Window
Manager Tweak, right?

Well, I think there is some problem with debian/ubuntu packages. Mint
tried to introduce it within LinuxMint XFCE 18.2, but it doesn't work:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/linuxmint/+bug/1704484

I tough this could be a Mint problem, but today I tried the package
from Xubuntu QA Experimental on Xubuntu 18.04 and it still doesn't
work.

***@i5447:~$ xfwm4 --replace

Should I report a bug about this? Where Xubuntu tracks its bugs?

Hi all,
I also feel more unification would be nice: with certain themes the
icons (as far as their background colour is concerned) behave
differently on my set up, depending on (I believe) whether they are
panel or notification plugins - especially when using dark themes this
is a bit of a nuisance when some icons become invisible.
Still: Xubuntu 18.04 is proving to be a rock solid release. Thanks for
all the work.

Hello. I got to agree with Kolmar on that subject. I know that someone
can view this issue as small and unimportant, but I also think that
panel icons (plugins and applets) should be somehow more unified. They
really don't look good on bigger panels, like Kolmar said. And it
seems like there are three different plugins to handle very similar
things.
I know that there are many more important things to do before 18.10
release (porting to GTK3, bug fixes etc.), but I hope that the
Xubuntu/Xfce devs will look at this issue in the future.
Thanks and keep up the good work,
Mariusz (Spass)
Howdy dear fellows,
With the new Xubuntu 18.04 it's a little confusing how these items
works together: panel plugins, indicator plugin, notification area
and status notifier plugin. What's the best way to go? Within Xubuntu
16.04 I use notification area and indicator plugin and everything
just works. Now I feel like there are a lot of these items to do the
same thing. For example, now we have a new Power manager panel
plugin. But on the power manager settings there is an option to show
the power manager icon on notification area which works with
notification area but doesn't with "status notifier plugin". Despite
this, the notification area icon behaves differently from the power
manager plugin.
One thing I love about XFCE is the panel because I like to use the
panel on the vertical. With these new panel plugins (notification,
power, sound etc), the icons size on a vertical panel 35px wide are
huge. With notification area plugin its possible to set the maximum
pixel size to 22px and everything sits nicely inside notification
area. What should I do now? It seems like XFCE has implemented a lot
of new features which just overlap other features that do the same
thing. When you put everything together it looks like out of place or
even a little buggy as things doesn't works as expected.
Thank you.

I think we should have only one notification "thing" and everything
above the Workspace Switcher in this picture goes inside of it, no?
Well, I'm just a user and this is how I interact with XFCE (=
Also, if someone knows a way to improve this with Xubuntu 18.04
through modifying something with Xfconf or tweaking the theme I would
be thankfully, because I'm sticking with it until 20.04.

Subject: Application testing for the new development cycle
Content-Type: text/plain; charset="utf-8"; Format="flowed"
During this new 6 month cycle we are hoping to ramp up testing of
applications - separate from testing ISO's.
So if you want to get involved with something that you can pick up, put
down and which isn't too onerous this could be for you.
Before we can set up testing of applications ( it's tracked on a Ubuntu
QA tracker and they call it package testing) we need to make sure the
tests we do have are up to date.
1. an up to date iso to boot - you can run the test from a USB, a
virtual machine
2. something to write on
3. a web browser
4. an e-mail client
5. patience - we've not checked them for at a year
You can grab the iso from
http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/xubuntu/daily-live/current - this url is
always the latest.
Open your browser at
http://packages.qa.ubuntu.com/qatracker/milestones/377/builds/146768/testcases
You'll see a list of applications and packages there.
1. Pick something you fancy checking - Reply All to this mail telling
other people what you intend to test (we'd not want everyone to be
checking the same testcase)
2. Open your chosen testcase, then click the Detailed information on
the testcase button and make a note of the Testcase ID
3. Follow the testcase _exactly_ as it tells you
4. Make notes where something isn't working as the testcase expects -
this is a bug, a testcase bug. If necessary continue to the next
step as best you can ignoring the instruction if the application no
longer works as written
5. When you have completed checking your testcase and assuming that you
found no errors with it - let us know on the mailing list.
That's a lot of words which basically mean - read the testcase, follow
it and note down where something is different.
If you did find an issue with the testcase - report it to Launchpad.
This could be as simple as the testcase calls for a button called Next
but it's now called Continue, it could even be that the testcase covers
something the application does but isn't tested.
1. Open your browser at
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu-manual-tests/+filebug
2. In the Summary box - please report it with something like this
syntax Testcase 1559 Catfish Fails To Open From Whiskermenu, 1559
being the ID you previously noted
3. Click Next - then regardless of any previous bugs it prompts you
with - Click No, I need to report a new bug
4. Using the notes you made while checking the testcase fill in your
further information
5. You can now if you wish tell us the bug number - but it's not
necessary as I am subscribed to Testcase Bugs
If you have needed to report a bug - the Testcase ID is important -
there are 1700 different ID numbers - and the majority refer to live
testcases.
If the list of applications on the package tracker doesn't include
something you use that you think should be tested - and is something
that we have _by default_ - you can report this to the same url above -
just say Testcase need for 'you fave application we don't test'
If I need further information I will comment on your bug report so
please keep an eye out for that.
If you found that easy to do - how about doing another one ;)
Cheers

Speaking of issues with the panel, I would also like to point out an
issue when the panel is greater than 50px tall, the "Window Buttons"
item contains two rows, despite the panel's "Number of rows" set to "1".
At 49px tall, the "Window Buttons" item displays normally.
This is very annoying for anyone with a high-resolution screen that
doesn't want to have a small panel. I have a 1080p screen and I like
having a 40px panel, but if I were to purchase a 1440p or 4k screen
then my ideal panel height would be above 50px.
